Quick answers
How much tax is withheld from $3,000 a fortnight?
$598 in 2026-27 if you claim the tax-free threshold, leaving $2,402. Without the threshold it is $818.
Why is the amount different from my yearly tax?
Withholding is a fortnight-by-fortnight estimate from the ATO's tables. Over a year $598 × 26 = $15,548, against $15,480 of tax and Medicare levy on $78,000; the difference comes back in your tax return. Bonuses, a second job or HELP change it.
Does this include HECS-HELP?
No. If you have a study loan your employer withholds an extra amount from a separate ATO schedule, which this page does not add. The HECS-HELP calculator shows the yearly repayment.
