Quick answers

What does a 5% pension contribution really cost?

£1,440 a year on a £40,000 salary with salary sacrifice, or £120 a month, for £2,000 in your pension. Through net pay or relief at source it costs £1,600, because you keep paying National Insurance on the full salary.

What is the minimum I have to pay?

Under auto-enrolment at least 8% of your qualifying earnings (the part between £6,240 and £50,270) goes in, with your employer paying at least 3% of that. On £40,000 that is 8% of £33,760: £2,700.80 a year, of which your employer pays £1,012.80.

Does this show what my pension will be worth when I retire?

No. It shows what goes in this year and what it costs you now. How it grows depends on investment returns, which nobody can promise; your provider's statement shows a projection.
